Adeyemi-Bero Named OPEC Chair for 2025

The Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG) has hailed the appointment of Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, one of its founding members, as the Chairperson of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Board of Governors for 2025. IPPG described the appointment as a significant milestone for Nigeria and Africa’s energy sector, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leader in the global energy market.

Adeyemi-Bero, who also served as IPPG’s pioneer Chairman and Trustee, was officially confirmed in the role at OPEC’s 189th conference meeting held last Tuesday. IPPG Chairman Abdulrazaq Isa expressed pride in the achievement, underscoring the immense pride it brings to the country and the exceptional talent that Nigeria contributes to the global energy industry.

In a statement, IPPG emphasized that Adeyemi-Bero’s elevation to the OPEC leadership is a testament to Nigeria’s leadership within the global energy space. “This appointment affirms Nigeria’s leadership in the global energy market and celebrates the exceptional talent in our industry,” the statement read.

IPPG also reiterated its support for ambitious targets set for Nigeria’s energy sector, which includes achieving 4 million barrels per day of oil production and 13 billion cubic feet of gas per day by 2030. These goals, the group noted, are crucial to Nigeria’s continued dominance in the global energy market.

During the 2024 IPPG Annual Dinner, IPPG Board of Trustees member and Executive Vice Chairman of ND Western Limited, Dr. Layi Fatona, delivered the remarks on behalf of the Chairman. Fatona thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, for their role in facilitating the appointment.

He also highlighted the need for further reforms in the petroleum industry, including amending aspects of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), finalizing international oil companies’ divestment transactions, supporting the “Decade of Gas” initiative, and enhancing security in the Niger Delta. He also called for infrastructure upgrades to ensure Nigeria meets both domestic and export market demands.

Fatona further praised the ongoing reforms under the Tinubu administration, noting that these efforts are positioning Nigeria as a global leader in the oil and gas sector. He expressed optimism for the year ahead and reaffirmed IPPG’s commitment to energy security and socio-economic stability.

The event also featured a toast to Nigeria’s achievements in the energy sector, as well as a presentation by renowned economist Dr. Adedoyin Salami, who discussed the topic: “Optimising Value from the Nigerian Oil & Gas Industry for Economic Transformation and Sustainable Growth.”

In conclusion, the event was a celebratory occasion, reflecting Nigeria’s growing influence in the global energy arena and the collective commitment of industry stakeholders to national progress and prosperity.
